BEAUTIFUL LOSERS (Fri 30 Oct & Fri 6 Nov)
Speakeasy Cinema launches with Aaron Rose’s documentary, a portrait of the former nerds, freaks and outsiders who coalesced around New York’s Alleged Gallery in the ’90s, and became accidental art-stars. Rooted in the DIY worlds of skate, surf, punk, hip hop and graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led, and in doing so created one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation.

Featuring Shepard Fairey (creator of the Obey Giant series), Stephen ‘ESPO’ Powers, the graphic design and advertising skews made by Mike Mills and Geoff McFetridge, Harmony Korine’s wacko filmography, and the arresting naivety in Chris Johanson, Margaret Kilgallen and Barry McGee’s bodies of work, Beautiful Losers looks at what happened when the outsiders became ‘in’, and celebrates the creative ethos that continues to inspire them.

THE UNIVERSE OF KEITH HARING (Sun 1 Nov)
The creator of some of the most popular, enduring images of late 20th-century art, Keith Haring was also an iconic figure of the downtown New York scene in the '80s. Christina Clausen's documentary offers an affectionate, deeply personal glimpse into Haring's life, from his early years growing up in a small, conservative Pennsylvania town to his heyday as a world-renowned artist, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Madonna, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Andy Warhol.

OBSCENE: A PORTRAIT OF BARNEY ROSSET AND GROVE PRESS (Mon 2 Nov)
OBSCENE is the definitive film biography of Barney Rosset, the influential publisher of Grove Press and the Evergreen Review. He acquired the then fledgling Grove Press in 1951 and soon embarked on a tumultuous career of publishing and political engagement that continues to inspire today’s defenders of free expression. Not only was he the first American publisher of acclaimed authors Samuel Beckett, Kenzaburo Oe, Tom Stoppard, Che Guevara, and Malcolm X, but he also battled the government in the highest courts to overrule the obscenity ban on groundbreaking works of fiction such as Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Tropic of Cancer and Naked Lunch. Ultimately he won and altered the course of history, but not without first enduring lawsuits, death-threats, grenade attacks, government surveillance, and the occupation of his premises by enraged feminists.

Actually, castagnaccio (including at Coffea Cafe) is made with chestnut flour, not walnut.

But it's definitely heavenly!

On my culture trips to Melbourne from the north of Tasmania, Heartland Records is my number one stop. First discovering Heartland unexpectedly years back, and standing opposite the shop looking up at that name, as a forever Sisters of Mercy fan, I knew disappointment would not be felt. Thank you for being.
